How It Works

For a rectangle, that’s length and width; for a circle, just the radius (half the distance across); for a triangle, the base and the perpendicular height — the straight-line distance from the base to the opposite point, not the length of a slanted side. Measure twice, at different points: rooms are rarely perfectly square, so take the length at both ends and use the larger figure. Measure wall-to-wall at floor level, keep the tape taut and level, and write dimensions down as you go rather than trusting memory. For a circle, it’s usually easier to measure the full diameter across the widest point and halve it than to guess where the center is.

The rectangle formula covers rooms, decks, garden beds, walls, and most lots. The circle formula earns its keep with round tables and rugs (for a tablecloth or pad), fire-pit zones, above-ground pools, and circular patios. Triangles appear whenever a space is cut on a diagonal: the odd corner of an angled lot, a gable-end wall under a roofline, or a sail-shade canopy. Common Mistakes to Avoid

The circle is the shape that catches the most people: the formula wants the radius, but the number you naturally measure is the diameter — the full distance across. Enter the diameter where the radius belongs and the area comes out four times too large, which turns a 10-foot round rug into a 314-square-foot monster. Measure across the widest point, then halve it. Triangles have their own trap: the “height” is the perpendicular distance from the base to the opposite point, not the length of the slanted side, and using the slant always overstates the area.
