Every unit is defined as a fixed number of milliliters, so the converter routes any amount through that common base — multiply by the “from” unit’s size, divide by the “to” unit’s size:

Worked Example: 2 Cups of Broth

US Cups vs Metric Cups — and Why Grams Are Different
Not all cups are equal. The US customary cup is 236.588 mL — what American measuring cups actually hold and what this converter uses. US nutrition labels round it to a “legal cup” of 240 mL, while the metric cup used in Australia and much of the world is 250 mL. That 5–6% gap is harmless in a soup but noticeable in baking, so check where a recipe was written before assuming its cup matches yours. (Australia also uses a 20 mL tablespoon instead of the US 14.8 mL one.)
Grams are a different animal entirely. Volume-to-volume conversion is pure arithmetic, but converting cups to grams requires the ingredient’s density: a cup of all-purpose flour weighs about 120 g, a cup of granulated sugar about 200 g, and a cup of honey about 340 g. There’s no single cups-to-grams factor — that’s a job for an ingredient-specific weight converter, which is why serious baking recipes list weights directly.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
The most common error is scaling a recipe in your head one step at a time — halving 1⅓ cups, then halving again — and letting the rounding drift. Convert once, to small units: half of ⅓ cup is awkward as a fraction of a cup but is exactly 2 tablespoons plus 2 teaspoons. Doubling is safer than halving, but watch pan size: doubled batter in the same pan bakes differently, and seasonings and leaveners often shouldn’t be doubled at full strength. Second, don’t treat fluid ounces as weight ounces — a fluid ounce is volume, and only for water-like liquids do the two roughly coincide.
