What Is a Tile Calculator?

Tile is unforgiving to under-order: run out three rows from the wall and the store’s next shipment may be a visibly different shade, because ceramic and porcelain vary between production runs. A tile calculator converts your room’s footprint into the three numbers a tile order actually needs — square footage including a waste factor, the count of individual tiles for your chosen size, and how many boxes that translates to. How It Works

The room’s area is inflated by the waste percentage before anything is counted — the waste is genuine material that leaves as offcuts and breakage:

Area to order:

Sq Ft = Length(ft) × Width(ft) × ( 1 + Waste% )

Then the inflated area divides by one tile’s coverage and by the box coverage, each rounded up to whole units:

Worked Example: A 10 × 12 ft Room in 12 × 12 Tile

A 10 × 12 ft room is 120 sq ft. With the default 15% waste factor, the order becomes 120 × 1.15 = 138 sq ft. A 12 × 12 inch tile covers exactly one square foot, so that is 138 tiles; at a typical 10 sq ft per box, 138 ÷ 10 rounds up to 14 boxes. These are the calculator’s default inputs, so the breakdown shows the same chain on load. Switch the same room to 12 × 24 tile (2 sq ft each) and the count halves to 69 tiles — but the square footage to order stays 138 either way.

Why the Waste Percentage Depends on Your Layout

Waste is not padding — it is the predictable cost of geometry. Every course that meets a wall ends in a cut tile, and the offcut is often unusable. A straight lay in a squared-off room wastes the least; 10% covers it. The default 15% buys insurance for ordinary reality: rooms slightly out of square, a doorway and a closet to work around, a few tiles that crack on the wet saw or arrive chipped. Go to 20% for diagonal layouts, herringbone, and any repeating pattern — a diagonal set means every perimeter tile is cut at 45°, and pattern-matching means offcuts can rarely be reused elsewhere in the field. Large-format tile in a small room also pushes waste up, since each cut sacrifices more material. The few extra boxes are cheap compared to a shade-mismatched patch or a second delivery.

The costliest mistake is mixing lots: dye lot (shade) and caliber (size) codes are printed on every carton, and boxes from different runs can differ visibly in tone and a hair in dimension. Order everything at once, check the codes match at pickup, and buy from the same lot if you ever add a box. Second, don’t trust the 10 sq ft/box rule blindly — coverage per box genuinely varies by tile line (planks often come 8–9 sq ft per box, big squares 12–16), so confirm the carton figure and order by square footage.
