How the Calendar Math Works
You could find any weekday by counting days one at a time from a date you know — but mathematicians long ago compressed that into a formula. The best known is Zeller’s congruence, and the idea behind it is simple:

Worked Example: July 20, 1969
Enter July 20, 1969 — the day of the Apollo 11 moon landing — and the calculator returns Sunday. It was day 201 of 365, since 1969 was not a leap year. You can verify with Zeller’s congruence: plugging day 20, month 7, and year 1969 into the formula gives a remainder of 1, which in Zeller’s numbering (0 = Saturday) means Sunday.

Handy Weekday Patterns Worth Knowing
The one-day (or two-day) annual shift. Your birthday moves forward one weekday most years and two after a leap day passes. That’s why a Saturday birthday is followed by Sunday, Monday, Tuesday — then skips to Thursday.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
The classic error is forgetting the leap-day shift: assuming a date moves exactly one weekday per year. It moves two whenever a February 29 falls between the two dates you’re comparing, which is why quick mental estimates drift off by a day over a few years.
A second trap concerns very old dates. Before 1582 (later in Britain and its colonies, which switched in 1752), the Julian calendar was in use, and dates recorded then don’t line up with the modern Gregorian calendar this tool uses. Asking for the weekday of a medieval date gives the proleptic Gregorian answer — mathematically consistent, but not necessarily what a chronicler wrote at the time. For genealogy or history work around the switchover, check which calendar your source used. Finally, remember time zones don’t matter here: a calendar date has one weekday; only timestamps near midnight can differ between zones.
