What Is a BMR Calculator?
Your basal metabolic rate (BMR) is the energy your body burns just to stay alive — powering your heart, brain, liver, and every cell while you lie completely still. It typically accounts for 60–70% of the calories most people burn in a day, which makes it the natural starting point for any nutrition plan. How It Works
Four inputs drive the estimate: weight, height, age, and sex. Heavier and taller bodies contain more metabolically active tissue, so weight and height push BMR up. Metabolism slows gradually with age — the equation subtracts 5 kcal per year — and males receive a higher constant than females because men, on average, carry more lean mass at the same body size. Everything is converted to kilograms and centimeters internally, so you can enter imperial units and get the same answer.

The activity multipliers

Worked Example: A 30-Year-Old Woman
A 30-year-old woman, 165 cm tall and weighing 60 kg: 10 × 60 = 600, plus 6.25 × 165 = 1,031.25, minus 5 × 30 = 150, minus 161. That totals 1,320 kcal/day — her BMR, and exactly what the calculator shows with those inputs.
If she trains 3–5 days a week (moderately active), her maintenance intake is 1,320 × 1.55 ≈ 2,046 kcal/day. Sedentary, it would be only about 1,584 kcal/day — the activity multiplier changes the picture substantially.
BMR vs. TDEE: Which Number Should You Use?
BMR is a floor, not a food target. You burn more than your BMR every day simply by digesting meals, walking around, fidgeting, and exercising. TDEE — BMR times an activity factor — is the number to plan meals around: eat near it to maintain, below it to lose, above it to gain. A common mistake is eating at BMR itself in the name of fast weight loss; that creates an aggressive deficit that is hard to sustain and can cost you muscle. Also remember these multipliers describe averages. People routinely overestimate their activity level, so if the scale disagrees with the math after three or four weeks, trust the scale and adjust your factor downward one notch.

The most damaging mistake is treating BMR as a calorie target. BMR is what your body burns in a coma-like state of complete rest; every real day includes digestion, standing, walking, and thinking, all of which burn more. Eating at BMR therefore creates a much larger deficit than most people intend — often 700–1,000 kcal below true expenditure — which is difficult to sustain, hard on training quality, and likely to cost lean mass. Plan your intake around TDEE (a maintenance row in the breakdown table), then apply a deliberate, moderate adjustment for your goal.
A quieter error is letting the inputs go stale. BMR falls as you lose weight — roughly 10 kcal per kilogram lost under this equation — so targets calculated at your starting weight slowly become too generous.
