What Is a Paint Calculator?

Buying paint is a guessing game most people lose in one of two ways: an extra trip to the store mid-project, or a shelf of half-full cans in the garage. A paint calculator measures your walls, subtracts standard allowances for doors and windows, accounts for the number of coats, and tells you exactly how many gallons (or liters) to bring home — rounded up to whole cans, because that’s how paint is sold. How It Works

The calculator finds your total wall area by taking the room’s perimeter — twice the length plus twice the width — and multiplying by the wall height. It then subtracts a standard allowance of 21 sq ft per door and 15 sq ft per window (about 1.95 m² and 1.4 m² in metric), since you won’t be painting over glass and door slabs:

The remaining paintable area is multiplied by your number of coats, then divided by the paint’s coverage rate: a typical gallon covers about 350 sq ft on smooth, previously painted drywall, while a liter covers roughly 10 m². The result is rounded up to whole cans:

Only walls are counted — the ceiling is deliberately excluded, since it’s usually a different paint (flat ceiling white) bought separately. If you’re painting the ceiling too, run the calculator again using length × width as the area, or just add that area to your total.

Worked Example: A 12 × 10 ft Bedroom with 8 ft Walls

A 12 × 10 ft bedroom with 8 ft walls: 2 × (12 + 10) × 8 = 352 sq ft of wall. Subtract two doors (42 sq ft) and two windows (30 sq ft) to get 280 sq ft of paintable surface.

Two coats means covering 560 sq ft. At 350 sq ft per gallon, that’s 560 ÷ 350 = 1.6 gallons — so you buy 2 gallons, with a comfortable margin left for touch-ups. These are the calculator’s default inputs, so you’ll see the same 352 → 280 → 560 → 1.6 → 2-gallon chain in the breakdown on load.

Why You Should Always Round Up

Paint coverage ratings assume ideal conditions: smooth, sealed, previously painted walls and an experienced roller technique. Textured drywall, porous new plaster, and dramatic color changes all drink more paint than the label promises, and running out mid-wall risks a visible lap line where the old edge dried. Buying the next whole can also leaves you touch-up paint from the same tint batch — paint mixed on a different day can be very slightly off-shade. If you’re covering a dark or bold color with a light one, or painting bare drywall, add a coat of primer first; it’s cheaper than paint and often saves you an entire finish coat. And keep the math honest: measure wall height from the baseboard to the ceiling line, not floor to ceiling, if you have tall trim.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

The costliest mistake is trusting the label’s coverage figure on the wrong surface. The 350-sq-ft-per-gallon rating belongs to smooth, sealed, previously painted drywall; textured walls, bare plaster, and new drywall can absorb a third more paint, so drop the coverage input to 250–300 before you shop rather than discovering the shortfall halfway around the room. Its cousin is skipping primer on a dramatic color change — going from navy to off-white without primer can demand three or four finish coats, which costs far more than the primer would have. Enter the honest number of coats: with “one-coat” paints included, two coats is almost always the real answer.

Measurement errors round out the list. Don’t forget that the calculator covers walls only — the ceiling is a separate purchase in a different paint, and adding its area to the wall math quietly inflates the can count in the wrong product. Don’t hand-subtract doors and windows after the calculator already deducted its standard allowances (21 and 15 sq ft), or you’ll double-count the openings. And resist “optimizing” by buying the exact fractional amount from a different store or batch later: two cans tinted on different days can be visibly off-shade on the same wall. Round up once, from one batch, and keep the remainder for touch-ups.
