What Is a BMI Calculator?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a quick screening number that relates your weight to your height. Doctors, insurers, and researchers use it because it takes ten seconds to compute and correlates reasonably well with body fatness across large populations. How It Works
The calculator converts your height to meters and your weight to kilograms, then divides weight by height squared. Squaring the height matters: taller people naturally carry more mass, and dividing by height squared (rather than height alone) removes most of that effect, so the resulting number can be compared fairly between people of different statures. The WHO thresholds are then applied: below 18.5 is underweight, 18.5–24.9 is the normal range, 25–29.9 is overweight, and 30 or above is classed as obese.

The healthy weight range
The healthy weight range shown in the breakdown is simply the BMI formula run in reverse — it multiplies the two normal-range boundaries by your height squared to find the kilogram (or pound) band that would land you in the normal category. That gives you a concrete target rather than an abstract index.

Take someone who is 175 cm tall (about 5 ft 9 in) and weighs 70 kg (about 154 lb). Height in meters is 1.75, so height squared is 3.0625 m². Dividing 70 by 3.0625 gives a BMI of 22.9 — comfortably inside the normal range.
The healthy band for that height runs from 18.5 × 3.0625 = 56.7 kg up to 24.9 × 3.0625 = 76.3 kg (roughly 125–168 lb), which is exactly what the calculator reports, along with “Within the healthy range” for the distance row.
Where BMI Falls Short
BMI cannot tell muscle from fat. A rugby player at 90 kg and 178 cm scores an “overweight” 28.4 despite carrying very little body fat, while a sedentary person can sit at a “normal” 23 with a high fat percentage and low muscle mass — sometimes called normal-weight obesity. Older adults tend to lose muscle and bone density, so an elderly person’s BMI can look fine even as body composition worsens. It also says nothing about where fat is stored, and abdominal fat carries more health risk than fat on the hips and thighs. Treat BMI as a first-pass screen, and pair it with waist circumference or a body fat estimate for a fuller picture.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
The most common mistake is mixing units. Entering your weight in pounds while the calculator is set to metric makes the result meaningless — 154 “kilograms” instead of 154 pounds more than doubles your BMI. The second most common is sloppy height. Because height is squared in the formula, small errors are amplified: at 5 ft 9 in, being off by a single inch moves your BMI by roughly 0.7 points, enough to shift a borderline reading into a different category. Measure barefoot, against a wall, and use the same height every time rather than the number on an old driving licence.
Also avoid treating category boundaries as cliffs. A BMI of 24.9 and one of 25.1 describe essentially the same body; the WHO cutoffs are convenient lines on a continuous scale, not diagnoses. Do not weigh yourself daily and re-run the number after every meal — day-to-day scale movement of 1–2 kg is mostly water, so a monthly check under consistent conditions (same time of day, same clothing) is far more informative. And remember the adult cutoffs do not apply to children and teens, who need age- and sex-specific percentile charts instead.

Is BMI accurate for athletes?
Usually not. Muscle is denser than fat, so muscular people are routinely misclassified as overweight or even obese. If you strength train seriously, a body fat measurement is far more informative than BMI.
Do the same BMI cutoffs apply to everyone?
No. Children and teens use age- and sex-specific percentile charts, and several health bodies recommend lower action thresholds (around 23 for overweight) for people of South and East Asian ancestry, who face metabolic risk at lower BMIs.
What is a healthy BMI?
The WHO defines 18.5 to 24.9 as the normal range for adults. Within that band, mortality risk in large studies is lowest — though fitness, diet, and waist size matter at least as much as the number itself.
Should I try to change my weight based on BMI alone?
