Protein guidelines are written per kilogram of body weight because bigger bodies carry more muscle and other lean tissue to maintain. The baseline recommended dietary allowance for healthy, mostly sedentary adults is 0.8 g per kg per day — enough to prevent deficiency, but research consistently shows active people and anyone trying to build or preserve muscle benefit from considerably more. Why a range, not one number?

Studies find benefits across a band, not at a single magic figure. The low end of your range is an evidence-backed minimum; the high end suits harder training, older lifters, and deeper calorie deficits. Anywhere inside the band is a defensible target.

Worked Example: 80 kg, Active Lifestyle

Take someone who weighs 80 kg (about 176 lb), trains a few times a week, and selects the active-lifestyle goal of 1.2–1.6 g/kg. Multiplying out: 80 × 1.2 = 96 g and 80 × 1.6 = 128 g, so the calculator shows a daily target of 96–128 g.

Split across four meals, that is 24–32 g per meal — roughly a chicken breast, a block of tofu with grains, or a generous serving of Greek yogurt with nuts each time. Expressed entirely as cooked chicken breast at about 31 g of protein per 100 g, the whole day’s target would be roughly 310–413 g of chicken.

Distributing Protein Across the Day

Total daily intake matters most, but distribution helps. Muscle protein synthesis responds meal by meal, and roughly 0.3–0.4 g/kg per meal (20–40 g for most adults) appears to stimulate it near-maximally — which is why the breakdown divides your target across four feedings instead of assuming one giant dinner.
