What Is a One-Rep Max Calculator?
Your one-rep max (1RM) is the heaviest weight you could lift once with full range of motion and sound technique. Nearly every serious strength program prescribes loads as percentages of it — “5 sets of 3 at 85%” — yet actually testing a true max is fatiguing and carries injury risk. A 1RM calculator solves that: lift a submaximal weight for several clean reps, and a well-validated formula estimates the single-rep ceiling. How It Works
Enter the weight you lifted and how many quality reps you completed (2–12). The calculator applies both classic estimation formulas:

The percentage rows then multiply the Epley estimate by 95%, 90%, 85%, 80%, 70%, and 60% — the loads that correspond to heavy singles and doubles, strength work in the 3–6 rep zone, hypertrophy work around 7–12 reps, and lighter endurance or technique sets.
Why estimates diverge above ~10 reps
Epley’s formula is linear in reps while Brzycki’s is hyperbolic, so they drift apart at the extremes. At 10 reps they agree to the gram; at 12 reps Epley predicts 140% of the lifted weight while Brzycki predicts 144%, and beyond that the gap widens fast. High-rep sets are also limited as much by muscular endurance and conditioning as by pure strength, so any formula becomes unreliable there. For a trustworthy estimate, use a hard set of 2–6 reps.
Worked Example: 225 lb for 5 Reps
Suppose you bench 225 lb for 5 solid reps. Epley gives 225 × (1 + 5/30) = 225 × 1.1667 = 262.5 lb, which the calculator rounds to 263 lb. Brzycki gives 225 × 36 ÷ 32 = 253 lb — about 4% lower, a typical spread at five reps.
From the Epley estimate the training table reads: 95% ≈ 249 lb for heavy singles and doubles, 90% ≈ 236 lb, 85% ≈ 223 lb for 5–6 rep strength sets, 80% ≈ 210 lb, 70% ≈ 184 lb for 10–12 rep hypertrophy work, and 60% ≈ 158 lb for technique and endurance sets.
Training With Percentages, Safely
The real value of a 1RM estimate is programming, not bragging rights. Strength adaptations respond best to the 80–95% zone in low reps; muscle growth is well served anywhere from 60–85% taken close to failure; and beginners progress fastest of all leaving 1–2 reps in reserve rather than grinding maxes. Re-test with a rep calculation every few weeks instead of maxing out: a set of 5 at a new weight updates your whole percentage table with far less risk and recovery cost than a true max attempt. If you do test a real 1RM, treat it as an event — full warm-up pyramid, a spotter or safety pins, and no technique breakdown allowed.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
The biggest one is feeding the formula a soft set. If you lift 185 for 5 but could really have done 8, the estimate reflects the 5 you did, not the 8 you had — it will lowball your max and every percentage below it. Use a set taken to genuine near-failure with clean form. The opposite error is counting ugly reps: bounced benches and half-depth squats inflate the input weight relative to what you can lift correctly, producing a max you cannot actually handle.
Also remember estimates are lift-specific and formula-specific. A squat 1RM says nothing about your press, and upper-body lifts typically allow slightly fewer reps at a given percentage than lower-body lifts. Finally, do not chase the calculator week to week — day-to-day readiness swings a real max by a few percent, so program off a conservative number and let the reps in the gym, not the estimate, tell you when to move up.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which formula is more accurate, Epley or Brzycki?
They are equally respectable and agree closely up to about 10 reps. Brzycki tends to read slightly lower at moderate reps. If the two disagree meaningfully, your rep count is probably too high for a reliable estimate.
How many reps give the best estimate?
Two to six hard, clean reps. In that zone the formulas were best validated and the limiting factor is strength rather than endurance. Above ten reps the formulas diverge and all of them lose accuracy.
Should beginners test a true one-rep max?
Generally no. Novices gain strength weekly, so an estimate from a set of five updates constantly and safely. True max testing is best saved for experienced lifters with stable technique, a spotter, and a specific reason to test.
Is my estimated 1RM the same for every exercise?
No. Each lift has its own max, and rep ability at a given percentage differs by exercise and individual – people usually manage more reps at 80% on squats than on bench press. Calculate each lift separately.
