What Is a Waist-to-Hip Ratio Calculator?

Waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) is one of the simplest measures of where your body stores fat — and location turns out to matter as much as amount. Fat carried around the abdomen (an “apple” shape) surrounds the internal organs and is more strongly linked to heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic problems than fat carried on the hips and thighs (a “pear” shape). How It Works

The math is a single division — units cancel, so inches and centimeters give identical ratios:

The calculator rounds the ratio to two decimals and applies the WHO categories. For men: below 0.90 is low risk, 0.90–0.99 is moderate, and 1.00 or above is high. For women: below 0.80 is low, 0.80–0.84 is moderate, and 0.85 or above is high. The cutoffs differ because sex hormones drive genuinely different fat-storage patterns — a ratio that is unremarkable for a man can signal elevated abdominal fat in a woman.

Measuring correctly

Stand relaxed, breathe out normally, and keep the tape level with the floor. Measure the waist at its narrowest point, usually just above the navel and below the ribcage; if there is no obvious narrowing, use the midpoint between the lowest rib and the top of the hip bone. Measure the hips at the widest point around the buttocks. The tape should be snug against the skin without compressing it — and never measure over bulky clothing.

Worked Example: 80 cm Waist, 100 cm Hips

Take a woman with an 80 cm waist and 100 cm hips. Dividing gives 80 ÷ 100 = 0.80 exactly — the bottom edge of the WHO’s moderate band for women, so the calculator reports moderate risk. The same measurements on a man would fall well under the male 0.90 cutoff and read as low risk, a neat illustration of why the sex chips change the verdict without changing the arithmetic.

In imperial units the default example of a 34 in waist and 40 in hips gives 34 ÷ 40 = 0.85: low risk for a man, but high risk for a woman under the ≥0.85 cutoff.

Why WHR Complements BMI

BMI answers “how heavy are you for your height?”; WHR answers “where is the weight sitting?” The two catch each other’s blind spots. A muscular athlete can score an “overweight” BMI while a lean 0.82 WHR shows no abdominal fat problem; conversely, a person with a “normal” BMI can carry enough visceral fat to post a high WHR — a pattern sometimes called normal-weight central obesity that BMI misses entirely. Common Mistakes to Avoid

Most bad readings come from the tape, not the math. Measuring the waist where your trousers sit — below the belly — understates it; sucking in your stomach understates it further; a tilted tape overstates the hips. Measure skin-level, tape parallel to the floor, at the end of a normal exhale, and take each measurement twice, using the average. Consistency matters more than perfection: always measure at the same spots, at the same time of day, because post-meal bloating can add a couple of centimeters to the waist.

Also resist reading precision into two decimals. A ratio of 0.84 versus 0.86 is within measurement error, so a category boundary crossed by 0.01 is a nudge, not an alarm. Track the trend over months rather than reacting to single readings, and remember the WHO cutoffs describe population risk — ancestry, age, and fitness all shift what any individual number means.

Why are the cutoffs different for men and women?

Estrogen preferentially directs fat storage to the hips and thighs, so women naturally have lower ratios than men. The WHO sets a lower threshold for women (0.85 versus 1.00 for high risk) to reflect that baseline difference.

Is WHR better than BMI?

Neither replaces the other. BMI gauges overall weight for height while WHR gauges fat distribution; several large studies found WHR equal or better at predicting heart risk. Screening with both catches problems either would miss alone.

Does it matter whether I measure in inches or centimeters?

No. WHR is a pure ratio, so the units cancel – 34 in divided by 40 in and 85 cm divided by 100 cm both give exactly 0.85. Just use the same units for waist and hips.

Can I improve my waist-to-hip ratio?
