What Is a Paver Calculator?
A paver patio is really three orders in one: the pavers you see, the crushed-stone base they sit on, and the inch of sand between the two. A paver calculator takes your patio’s footprint and paver size and returns all three quantities — the count of pavers including a waste factor for cuts, plus the cubic yards of gravel base (at a 4-inch compacted depth) and bedding sand (at 1 inch) that the same footprint requires. Getting all three on one delivery matters, because the pavers are the last thing you touch: everything underneath has to be bought, spread, and compacted first.

Worked Example: A 12 × 10 ft Patio in 4 × 8 Brick
A 12 × 10 ft patio is 120 sq ft. A classic 4 × 8 inch brick paver covers 32 ÷ 144 = 0.22 sq ft, so it takes 4.5 per square foot. With the default 5% waste factor: 120 × 1.05 = 126 sq ft, and 126 ÷ 0.22 rounds up to 567 pavers. Underneath, the 4-inch gravel base is 120 × (4 ÷ 12) = 40 cu ft = 1.48 yd³, and the 1-inch sand bed is 10 cu ft = 0.37 yd³. These are the calculator’s default inputs, so the breakdown shows the same chain on load. Swap to 12 × 12 pavers and the count drops to 126 — but the base and sand don’t change at all.
Base Prep Is the Real Job
Pavers don’t fail; bases do. Every heaved corner, sunken chair leg divot, and wavy edge you’ve seen in a paver patio traces back to what’s underneath. The honest workload is excavation and base: dig out 7–8 inches (paver thickness plus sand plus base), grade a slight slope away from the house — about 1 inch per 8 feet — and lay crushed stone in 2–3 inch lifts, running a plate compactor over each lift before adding the next. A rented plate compactor is non-negotiable; hand tamping a patio-sized base is neither practical nor effective. The sand layer is screeded to one smooth inch but never compacted directly — the pavers get bedded into it, then the compactor runs over the finished surface. After that, sweep polymeric sand into the joints and mist it: it hardens into a flexible seal that locks pavers together, blocks weeds, and keeps ants from mining the joints. Freeze-thaw regions and driveways need deeper bases — 6 to 12 inches — so treat the calculator’s 4-inch patio base as the minimum, not the ceiling.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
The most common failure is laying pavers on bare dirt or a token inch of sand — the first winter undoes the whole weekend. Nearly as common is skipping edge restraint: without a spiked plastic or concrete edge, the outer courses creep outward and joints open everywhere. Order-side mistakes matter too: 5% waste is only enough for a straight lay in a clean rectangle, so choose 10% for curves, circle kits, herringbone, or anything with many cut edges — each cut on a masonry saw consumes a paver, and a matching batch later is not guaranteed. Don’t substitute regular play sand for joint sand, and don’t use stone dust as bedding where drainage matters. Finally, call before you dig — a patio excavation is exactly deep enough to find shallow utility lines.

Joint sand blended with polymer binders: sweep it in dry, mist it, and it cures into a firm but flexible joint filler. It locks pavers in place and resists weeds, washout, and ants far better than plain sand. For a patio you want to set and forget, use it.
Can I lay pavers over an existing concrete slab?
