How It Works

In US mode the calculator divides your trip distance by your miles-per-gallon figure to find gallons needed, then multiplies by the pump price:

US units:

Gallons = Miles ÷ MPG  →  Cost = Gallons × $/gal

In metric mode the logic flips slightly, since L/100 km measures consumption rather than economy: distance is multiplied by the consumption figure and divided by 100 to get liters, which are then priced out:

Metric units:

Liters = km × (L/100 km) ÷ 100  →  Cost = Liters × price/L

Cost per mile is simply the total cost divided by the distance; the same division gives cost per kilometer in metric mode.
